Marriage is something that the husband and the wife have to work on each day. It is not an easy task to stay married without quarreling or throwing tantrums sometimes. This is normal for all couples. We cannot stay happy all the time. However, we must realize that the not-so-happy moments in marriage can be remedied if we only try to solve them with a clear and open mind. Here are some tips and reminders that might help when you will feel like your marriage is at the brink of crumbling. We just need to be reminded that nobody is perfect and that we are all persons who are still learning to improve in our relationships.
(1) NEVER STOP COURTING!
Never stop dating. Never ever take your spouse for granted. When you got married, you assured each other that you would own each other's hearts and fiercely protect each other. This is the most important and sacred treasure you will ever be entrusted with. You chose each other, for better or for worse. Never forget that and never ever get lazy in your love.
(2) PROTECT YOUR OWN HEART.
Just as you committed to protect each other's hearts, you must also guard your own with the same vigilance. Love yourself fully. Love the world openly, but there is a special place in your heart where no one must enter except for your spouse. Keep that space always ready to receive him/her and invite him/her in and refuse to let anyone or anything else enter there.
(3) FALL IN LOVE OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
You, as a person, will constantly change. You're not the same persons you were when you got married. Certainly, in five years, you will not be the same persons you are today. Change will come, and in that, you have to re-choose each other everyday. Always fight to win each other's love just as you did when you were still in the courting stage.
(4) ALWAYS SEE THE BEST IN YOUR SPOUSE.
Focus only on what you love. What you focus on will expand. If you focus on what bugs you, all you will see are the reasons to be bugged. If you focus on that you love, you can't help but be consumed by love. Focus to the point where you can no longer see anything but love, and you know without a doubt that you are the luckiest man/woman on earth to have this woman/man as your spouse.
(5) IT'S NOT YOUR JOB TO CHANGE OR FIX YOUR SPOUSE.
Your job is to love your spouse as he/she is with no expectation of her ever changing. And if he/she changes, love what he/she becomes, whether it's what you wanted or not. He/she is his/her own person with a brain and a heart. His/her growth as a person is all up to him/her. When he/she needs your advice, you may do so but you do not dictate to him/her how he/she should be, and vice-versa.
(6) TAKE FULL ACCOUNTABILITY!
You are responsible for your own emotions. It's not your spouse's job to make you happy, and she cannot make you sad. You are responsible for finding your own happiness, and through that, your joy will spill over into your relationship and your love. It is how you see the world that will make your world. Your spouse will not be the one to make your world for you.
(7) NEVER BLAME YOUR SPOUSE IF YOU...
get frustrated or angry at him/her, it is only because it is triggering something inside of YOU. They are YOUR emotions, and it's YOUR responsibility. When you feel those feelings, take time to have presence of mind and to look within yourself. Then, understand what it is inside of YOU that is missing or lacking and if it's asking to be healed. Self-evaluation and self-healing is very important so that you understand what is triggering all your negative emotions. That way, your spouse does not become a victim of your negative emotions.
(8) ALLOW YOUR SPOUSE TO JUST BE.
When your spouse is sad or upset, it's not your job to fix it. It's your job to hold your spouse and let him/her know that it's going to be okay. Let him/her know that you hear her, and that he/she is important and that you are that pillar on which he/she can always lean on. The female is about change, emotion and hormones. Sometimes, they cannot understand their own emotions due to crazy hormones. And the male must remain strong and unjudging so that she will trust him and open her soul to him. Don't run away from each other. Both of you must communicate when things cool down.
(9) THERE'S A RIGHT TIME TO BE SILLY.
Don't take yourself too seriously. Make each other laugh. It excites happy hormones. Laughter makes everything else easier. Making the wife laugh is a sure fire way to let her forget what she is mad about.
(10) FILL YOUR SPOUSE'S SOUL EVERYDAY.
Learn each other's love language. After years of being married to each other, you as a couple will become familiar with each other's body language. You would know just by a stare or a caress, how the other one is feeling. Use this body language to make each other feel important and validated and cherished.
(11) BE PRESENT.
Make sure that you give each other not only your time, but also your focus, your attention and your soul. Do whatever it takes to clear your head so that when you are with each other, you are fully with each other. Treat your spouse as you would your most valuable client because he/she is. He/she is supposed to be the most important person to you, and you wouldn't want to lose him//her.
(12) AVOID BEING AN IDIOT.
You will make mistakes! But try not to make too big of mistakes, and learn from the ones that you make. You may talk about it, process how it happened, admit you made it, ask for forgiveness and promise yourself to avoid doing it again. You're not supposed to be perfect, just try not to be stupid by committing the same mistake twice or thrice.
(13) GIVE EACH OTHER SOME SPACE.
We all need space at some point in our marriage. Sometimes, we just need to take a break and evaluate the relationship from the outside, just to be able to renew ourselves somehow and get re-centered. We need to find ourselves from getting lost inside a relationship. This results to a healthy relationship because one could avoid being totally dependent on the other, and one can avoid blaming the other for everything that's happening in his/her life. Your spouse should not be your whole life because if something goes wrong, you will naturally blame it all on your spouse. In short, have a halal social life outside of your marriage. This breaks the boredom in marriage.
(14) ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE VULNERABLE.
You don't have to have it all together. Be willing to share your fears and feelings. Your spouse will not judge you immediately. You must both be open to each other and be willing to learn from each other so that you can make your relationship better. It's called a 'relationship' because you must be able to relate to each other, i.e., to understand what the other is going through, to tolerate your differences and to sympathize with each other.
(15) BE FULLY TRANSPARENT.
It takes courage to fully love, to fully open your heart and let someone in when you don't know if he/she will like what he/she finds. Part of that courage is allowing your spouse to love you completely, your darkness as well as your light. Drop the mask and be honest to your spouse. However, if there is a mar in your character, then know that it is for your own good to reform yourself for the better.
(16) NEVER STOP GROWING TOGETHER.
It is expected that as individuals, you have your own individual goals for yourselves. Make sure that as a couple, you find common goals, dreams and visions to work on. This makes your partnership stronger and more productive. Set goals for the next five years or so. Dream together what you want to have or to be in the future. Envision your future to be so much better than your present so that you get to inspire each other.
(17) DO NOT WORRY ABOUT MONEY.
Although financial stability is important for survival, money should not become a big issue in your marriage. Money is like a game. Find ways to work together as a team to win it. It never helps when the teammates fight. Figure out ways to leverage both persons' strengths to win. Also important is budgeting. Do not spend more than what you earn. This will make everything easier. If you want something, which is out of budget, then save up for it. Do not sacrifice the basic needs for unnecessary wants.
(18) FORGIVE IMMEDIATELY.
Forgiveness is freedom -- freedom from the hurt and the pain that will build up while you do not forgive. The moment that you forgive, you give your spouse the chance to make up for his/her mistake. You give each other the chance to heal and move on. Learn to forgive as soon as the other admits to his/her mistake. Do not prolong his/her agony by giving him/her the silent treatment longer than necessary. Know that your spouse will keep hurting too while you do not forgive.
(19) NEVER BLURT OUT YOUR MARRIAGE ISSUES TO OTHER PEOPLE.
This doesn't help, most of the time, especially when you tell your issues to the wrong people who do not really know how to handle such situations or worse yet, he/she is also in a miserable marriage. Not everybody is contented with their own lives, so spare yourself from letting others know about your own discontentment. It is best if you consult a marriage counsel or read relationship books, which can give you more helpful and constructive advices on your particular situation. This can clear your mind and lessen your being emotional about the situation, which sometimes result to a disastrous separation.
(20) ALWAYS REMEMBER TO LOVE FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH, FIRST AND FOREMOST.
If this is the guiding principle through which all your choices in your marriage is governed, there is nothing that can threaten the happiness of your marriage. Know that your marriage is Allah's divine decree. The way you handle this greatest blessing is an expression of your gratefulness to Allah. So, take good care of it and always remember that every good deed, every expression of love and care you show to your spouse, is part of your worshipping Allah. Be patient with a beautiful patience so that love will always endure.
